Our yearly event in Sierra de Guara is coming to a decade now. We experienced a pause during the pandemic period. But then, we continued on the following year. What thought to be just a long weekend escape became a yearly event for our group. It became a kickoff for the summer season. Roser and Frederic introduced this outdoor activity to us and we fell in love with the place and also the camaraderie that came with it. Our group comes together and enjoy each other company and a also time to catch up with what’s going on in our lives.
Sierra de Guara is a mountain range located in the northeastern part of Spain, in the province of Huesca, within the autonomous community of Aragón. It is part of the Pre-Pyrenees mountain system, situated between the Pyrenees and the Ebro River plain.

Sierra de Guara is known for its stunning natural beauty, featuring breathtaking landscapes and a diverse range of flora and fauna. It is a popular destination for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts, offering activities such as hiking, canyoning, rock climbing, and caving.
One of the main highlights of Sierra de Guara is its abundance of canyons and gorges. The Sierra and Canyons of Guara Natural Park is renowned for hosting some of Europe's finest canyons, providing thrilling descents and impressive scenery.
In addition to its natural wonders, Sierra de Guara has a rich history and cultural heritage. The area is dotted with traditional villages and hamlets that preserve their typical architecture and centuries-old traditions.
One of them is Alquezar. The town of Alquézar is characterized by its narrow, winding streets and well-preserved stone buildings that showcase its medieval heritage. Its name, derived from the Arabic word "al-qasr" meaning "fortress," reflects its defensive past. At the heart of the town stands the impressive Colegiata de Santa María, a fortified collegiate church built in the 9th century. Its sturdy walls, Gothic architecture, and beautiful cloister are among the town's main attractions.

Alquézar offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscapes, with rugged cliffs, deep canyons, and the crystal-clear waters of the Vero River. The river has carved impressive gorges over time, making it a popular spot for outdoor activities such as hiking, canyoning, and rock climbing.
As for us, Canyoneering is a moment to share food and wine, stories, and news to what’s going on around us. It is time to relax, appreciate the beauty of this place and most of all, being together again.

Every choice of the canyoning we take is another experience different from the other year. The water level and the temperature keep on changing every year. Most likely, it has to do with climate change which is affecting every corners in this world. Some canyons are dry and others are wet. In the dry canyoning like Baranco Mascon and other barranco de Virgen are dry and so, we opt for rapelling activities in these areas.
Others are the a combination of dry and wet like the Oscar, one of my favorites.
In summary, Sierra de Guara is an exceptional natural destination in Spain, perfect for those seeking outdoor adventures and the opportunity to admire the scenic beauty of canyons and gorges. It has become a playground and a time of catching up for our group.
