After many years in Barcelona, it was only at this time that Portugal came to mind. There are so many places to visit or competing one another. However, it wasn’t Lisbon, the capital — I opted for Oporto. Also, I skipped traveling at Christmas for sometime. In Spain, it is customary for people to travel this long weekend. A great opportunity to travel and experience different Christmas festivities in Europe. This was the fourth time. At this time — Porto. It is the second biggest city of Portugal. A great place to enjoy their cuisine and wine. Indeed, it didn’t disappoint me and I say, it is to be repeated in the near future. It's just a hour flight from Barcelona. Going there was a breeze and also taking a taxi to the center.

I stayed in a nice hostel in the center and at night, the hostel’s chef would prepare something for the guests and I got a chance to help out in cooking “Rebanada” — a Portuguese version of French toast. In Spain, we call it Spanish Torrijas.

3. Portuguese Christmas Cuisine: No Christmas celebration in Porto is complete without savoring traditional Portuguese holiday dishes. Families gather around the table to enjoy bacalhau (salted codfish), roast lamb, and the famous Bolo Rei (King's Cake), a festive dessert filled with nuts and candied fruits. Many restaurants in Porto feature special Christmas menus, allowing visitors to experience the delicious flavors of the season.

The Casa da Música, Porto's modern concert hall, often features special holiday performances, including classical concerts, choral presentations, and seasonal music. 5. Midnight Mass: Attending Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve is a deeply rooted tradition in Portugal. Porto's historic churches, such as the Clérigos Church and the Porto Cathedral, hold special services that are open to the public. The captivating ambiance of these centuries-old religious sites adds a profound touch to the holiday experience.

6. Riverfront Celebrations: The Ribeira district, located along the Douro River, comes alive with Christmas celebrations.
