Taking on the High Moutains

Summer in Barcelona can get really hot and humid and no wonder many would venture out and go to a place cooler. I wanted to do something different at this time and I was looking for a challenge to push myself outside of my comfort zone.

One day in an English class and right in the office of Roser Batlle; just the right person to ask for an outdoor activity. She and her husband Frederic are familiar with natural parks in Catalonia as well as in Aragon. She suggested Carros de Foc and stood up and headed to her cabinet to pick up the map and handed it to me. I knew this would be a challenge. I knew also that I would do it alone. There are many downs going solo especially when you trek to the high mountain. You could get injured and nobody to help you. Well, there are many what Ifs or scenarios that could come up. If I began to think about all these, hesitancy would creep in and for sure, I would end up not going. So, I ignored all these scenarios and called the center of Refugios of Carros de Foc and the person was so helpful and together, we talked about the stops I would be taking and it was set.

Carros de Foc

The Carros de Foc is a popular loop trail located in the Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park in the Spanish Pyrenees. This stunning circular route takes hikers through some of the most breathtaking landscapes in the region, offering a unique and challenging trek.

Here are some key points about the Carros de Foc trail:

  1. Location: The trail is situated in the Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park, which is known for its pristine lakes, dense forests, and impressive mountain scenery. The park is located in the Catalonia region of Spain.

  2. Distance and Duration: The Carros de Foc loop is approximately 55 kilometers (34 miles) long, and it typically takes around 4 to 7 days to complete, depending on the hiker's pace and chosen itinerary.

  3. Refuges: One of the unique aspects of the Carros de Foc trail is the network of mountain refuges along the route. Hikers can stay overnight in these refuges, which are strategically located throughout the trail. The refuges provide basic accommodations and meals, allowing hikers to experience the adventure without carrying a heavy backpack.

  4. Scenic Highlights: The trail takes hikers through diverse landscapes, including high mountain passes, alpine meadows, and crystal-clear lakes. Some of the scenic highlights include views of iconic peaks like the Encantats and the Pica d'Estats.

  5. Challenges: While the trail is accessible to experienced hikers, it does involve challenging sections, including steep ascents and descents, rocky terrain, and potentially unpredictable weather. Hikers should be well-prepared and have the appropriate gear.

  6. Permit Requirements: Due to the popularity of the trail and to manage the environmental impact, a permit system is in place for overnight stays in the refuges. It's advisable to check the current regulations and secure the necessary permits in advance.

If you're planning to embark on the Carros de Foc adventure, make sure to research current trail conditions, obtain the required permits, and be well-prepared for a memorable trek in the stunning Pyrenees.

I took a taxi from Caldes de Boi to Mirador Presa de Cavaliers (Dam) and walked to Refugi Ventosa i Calvell. After some stop-and-go hiking, I reached the refuge just in time for dinner. Checked in, took a quick shower, and joined fellow hikers in the dining hall. I sat next to a guy planning an extra climb, but I opted for the loop.

The refuge had a great atmosphere. Mingled with a French mountaineer at my table. The meal was abundant and delicious. Sleeping in a refuge may be challenging for some due to close quarters, but I adapted quickly. Moving between refuges is tough, but the stunning landscapes make it worthwhile.

My thanks to Roser Batlle for the suggestion. Although I wasn’t able to complete the full loop due to pulled calf muscle. I really enjoyed the challenge and experience in taking on the high mountains on my own, although I met nice people along the way and join them at certain points of the journey.
