Sharon and John stayed their first night in a lodge about 15 minutes from Skaftafell Tjaldsvaedi Campground where we stayed. Driving around is scenic and an amazing experience for all of us to be doing this. The drive to Diamond Beach typically involves traveling along Iceland's Ring Road (Route 1) or other scenic routes that offer breathtaking views of the surrounding landscapes. You'll encounter dramatic vistas of rugged coastlines, expansive glaciers, and towering mountains along the way.
Diamond Beach, also known as Breiðamerkursandur, is a stunning natural wonder located in southeastern Iceland, near the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon. This captivating beach gets its name from the glistening icebergs that wash ashore from the nearby lagoon, creating a scene reminiscent of sparkling diamonds scattered along the black sand beach.
The icebergs originate from the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier, which is part of the larger Vatnajökull glacier, Europe's largest ice cap. As the glacier calves, or breaks off, into the lagoon, the icebergs drift towards the Atlantic Ocean and eventually wash ashore on Diamond Beach.
