Explore the World of Movia
2018 Musica del Vi
I noticed a young guy from Movia decanting and it was a show stopper as we walked around, but I didn’t get a chance to stop by. Then, I saw him again in 2020 and at this time, he was moving around with his girlfriend and we got a chance to mingle with them. I found out he was the young generation that would continue the family tradition of winemaking. Their family believes in creating the best quality of wine crafted by nature or the environment.
Founded in the early 18th century, Movia has been under the stewardship of the Kristančič family since 1820. Presently, Movia spans over 30 hectares, with 25 of them comprising vineyards that stretch across both the Slovenian-Goriška Brda region and the Italian side in Collio.
The Slovenian-Goriška Brda Wine Region, often referred to simply as Brda, is renowned for its diverse terroir that contributes to the production of high-quality wines. The terroir of this region is characterized by:
Geography: Brda is situated in the western part of Slovenia, near the Italian border. The hilly landscape is marked by terraced vineyards, providing optimal sun exposure for grape ripening.
Climate: The region experiences a sub-Mediterranean climate, influenced by the Adriatic Sea. Mild winters and warm, dry summers with significant diurnal temperature variations create favorable conditions for grape cultivation.
Soil: The soil composition varies, consisting of marl, sandstone, and flysch deposits. These diverse soil types contribute to the complexity and character of the wines produced in the region.
Altitude: The vineyards in Brda are often planted at different altitudes, taking advantage of the slopes and hills. This variation in altitude influences temperature, sunlight exposure, and drainage, all of which impact grape development.
Grapes: A variety of grape varieties are cultivated in Brda, including both local and international varieties. White grapes such as Rebula (Ribolla Gialla), Friulano, and Malvasia thrive alongside red varieties like Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Pinot Noir.
The combination of these factors creates a unique terroir that contributes to the distinctive character and quality of wines produced in the Slovenian-Goriška Brda Wine Region.
At Movia, they blur the distinction between personal and professional realms, as every moment holds the potential to embody both familial and business aspects simultaneously. Their overarching mission of winemaking is intricately woven into our identity and lifestyle. Their daily routines revolve around the symbiosis of wine and time, which is a lasting commitment. Embracing this lifestyle is seamless for them, given that wine is an integral facet of their very being.
From the outset, Ales Kristančič aspired to create wines that harmonize with nature, the vine, and the cosmos.
Sustainability has consistently taken precedence in their daily agricultural and winemaking processes. Vineyards receive nourishment from biodynamic composts. Movia wines undergo fermentation solely with indigenous yeasts, and in the winemaking process, minimal additives are employed, with sulfur used sparingly and not in all wines. The cellar is cleansed using steam, ensuring that the water returned to nature remains unpolluted.
Their winery has been certified organic since 2004.
