Tenerife

Wrapping up the summer season, catching up with Javier was delightful. We shared stories of our summer escapades—Javier and Amparo's adventures in Chile and Bolivia, and my own bike tour through France and parts of Spain. Always seeking unique experiences that surprise our palates, Javier ordered a bottle from the island of Tenerife, and it truly lived up to expectations. The wine perfectly aligns with my taste preferences.

According to tasting notes, “light body, fresh, bright, juicy, good acidity”.

This wine has evolved from being an exciting new discovery to a sought-after wine list staple in seemingly record time. Really, you could say the same for any wine produced by Suertes del Marqués: they capture the essence of their place of origin so vividly, all you need to do is put your nose in the glass for express transport to the Canary Islands.

Unable to visit Tenerife, home of Suertes del Marqués, I long for the experience through these wines. At an affordable price, this red wine, "Medianías," sourced from 80-year-old Listán Negro vines in Valle de la Orotava, showcases Canarian essence—smoky, savory, and juicy. Collaborating with C.V.N.E., it stands out as distinctly Tenerife. The term "Medianías" refers to midlands at 600 meters, unique to the Valle de la Orotava. Crafted from traditional cordón trenzado-trained vines, it's 100% Listán Negro in 2020, grown in volcanic soils from the Teide volcano.

Valle de la Orotava, a DO on Tenerife, hosts Suertes del Marqués' organically farmed vineyards. With old vines, including ungrafted ones over a century old, they cultivate native grapes like Listán Negro and Blanco. The trenzado method aids in grape maturation, allowing fermentation with whole clusters for nine months in a mix of concrete tanks and barrels.

Clean and well-made, the 2020 Medianías is funky, earthy, and wild. Deep garnet-red with dark fruits and smoky earth on the nose, it leans towards Northern Rhône Syrah in character, marked by volcanic influence. Black cherry, cranberry, and plum flavors ride a savory wave, leading to a smoky finish with firm tannins and brisk acidity. Serve at 60 degrees with rustic dishes, like the attached Canarian ropa vieja recipe, celebrating this outstanding red wine value. Cheers!
