Camino del Norte

Taking an overnight bus from Barcelona, we arrived in Irún early in the morning. First, we visited the center and had a coffee, before gradually heading up the hill to the Ermitage de Guadalupe (Guadalupeko Ama Birjinaren Santutegia), and from there, a short steep climb to reach the peak of the North Peak (High Route) also called Parraldeko Bidea (Jaizkibel gailurretik).

As the sun beat down on us atop the majestic Jaizkibel, the heat intensified, signaling the perfect moment to pause and take in the breathtaking view of the vast Atlantic Ocean. It was in this serene spot that a chance encounter with a local unfolded, revealing a fascinating tale from the Whaling period.

The local recounted a time when the coastal residents orchestrated a unique symphony of drums to communicate during the Whaling era. The rhythmic beats served as signals, echoing across the landscape, notifying one another of the approaching whales. This auditory collaboration allowed them to intercept the majestic creatures, unveiling a harmonious connection between the locals and the expansive ocean.

As the sun continued to cast its radiant glow, the soaring temperature prompted us to seek refuge. Serendipity led us to a hidden oasis with a welcoming canopy, offering not just shade but also a respite in the form of refreshing drinks. It was a moment to catch our breath, cool down, and rejuvenate before embarking on the descent towards Pasai Donibane.

Descending the sun-kissed slopes, our journey led us to the enchanting Santa Ana Ermita. This picturesque spot unfolded before us, offering a panoramic view of the bay that left us in awe. The shimmering waters below mirrored the sky's brilliance, creating a captivating scene that etched itself into our memory.

Every step of our adventure on Jaizkibel became a chapter in a story woven with intriguing encounters, unexpected respites, and panoramic vistas. The heat, once a challenge, transformed into an opportunity for serendipitous discoveries and moments of rejuvenation. It's these unexpected tales and scenic respites that make every journey along the Camino del Norte a captivating and unforgettable experience.

We arrived in La Concha in San Sebastián in the afternoon just in time to check in and freshened up and headed to downtown to have pintxos (tapas).
