Chagny to Chalone-sur-Sáone

Once we got to the canal of Chagny. I recall the time when I followed two cyclists that were going fast. I followed them and carried away by the pace, I missed to make a tour heading to Beaune. I was heading to Lyon. So, immediately turned around.

Monique, Dominique, and I hit the road for the first stage. We stopped at the overpass where Monique showed the water canal crossing the railway. We got to see classic boats anchored on the side as we pedaled our way Chalon-sur-Saone. These narrow and long boats are long that are made into a house with decorations around the deck. Many of them are sill functional and being able to relocate. I just wonder how the people live in this kind of environment and for sure, many are for rental.

We took this pathway all the way to Chalon-sur-Sâone. It is a commune located in the Saône-et-Loire department in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region of eastern France. Situated along the banks of the Saône River, the town has a rich history and is known for its picturesque streets, historical architecture, and vibrant cultural scene.

The town's origins date back to Roman times, and it was historically significant as a military outpost. Chalon-sur-Saône is renowned for being the birthplace of photography, as the first photographic image was produced here by Nicéphore Niépce in the early 19th century. This legacy is celebrated in the local museum dedicated to the history of photography.

Architecture in Chalon-sur-Saône features a mix of medieval and Renaissance styles, with notable structures including the Saint Vincent Cathedral, a striking example of Gothic architecture. The town is also characterized by its charming old town, where visitors can stroll along cobblestone streets, enjoy cafés, and explore local shops.

Chalon-sur-Saône serves as an important economic hub in the region, with a focus on industries such as agriculture and commerce. Additionally, the town hosts various events throughout the year, fostering community engagement and tourism.

Overall, Chalon-sur-Saône offers a blend of historical significance, cultural richness, and scenic beauty, making it a worthwhile destination for those interested in exploring the heart of France.

When we got there, we proceeded to the center and then visited the church, and then crossed the bridge. We also decided to get our bike serviced at Decathlon, a sporting goods store. Dominque had some issues with her worn out tire while I had erratic gearing shifts, although it was much better right after I adjusted it before leaving. The noise of the rear break has been bothering for sometime. I knew that it was infected with oil during my tour last year So, the girl working in the bike shop passed her finger on the disc break and saw the oily dirt mark and suggested a disc break and padding replacement. I felt bad to replace the disc, because I bought this bike last year in Nantes. Just to get rid of the noise, I agreed with it. I also mentioned that gear shifters need a bit of adjustments. When we came back after lunch, I felt better and the rear break was replaced and new.

Monique and Dominique on the way back

Rully is a charming wine-producing village in the Côte Chalonnaise area of Burgundy, France, known for its exceptional Chardonnay and Pinot Noir wines. With a history dating back to the Middle Ages, it’s filled with picturesque vineyards, historic châteaux like Château de Rully, and narrow stone streets that capture Burgundy's traditional charm. Rully's vineyards benefit from limestone-rich soils that give its wines a unique character, contributing to Burgundy's prestigious reputation. Besides wine, visitors can enjoy scenic walking trails, local cuisine, and the warm, welcoming atmosphere typical of small Burgundy villages.

We added a side trip when we came back. We added Rully. First, we stopped for at the Cave of Rully for a wine tasting experience and decided to buy two bottles.

. We took the same pathway and made a stop at the Cave of Rully just the side road to have wine tasting. Then, we proceeded to the town of Rully, and then took a different bike trail on the way back. On the way to our campsite, we stopped at the grocery to buy something for dinner. At this time, we bought two bottles of wine. Last night’s one bottle wasn’t enough. The temperature had dropped down because of rain showers. So, we decided to set the table inside.

After dinner, Dominique received an update about her close friend Philippe who was in a coma and given a mophine treatment. We consoled her and there wasn’t much she could, but wait.
