Meet Up in Chagny

After meeting Monique and Dominique for the first time in Chevry- Chambartin last year, we embarked together a bike route in Burgundy. Although I had seen and experienced a bit of everything from last year’s Eurovelo 6 in France that brought me to Burgundy. Having planned together for days is a test for all of us to be stepping out of our comfort zone and we chose Chagny as our meeting point.

Chagny is a commune located in the Saône-et-Loire department in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region of eastern France. It is situated approximately 13 kilometers south of the city of Beaune and is known for its picturesque landscapes and vineyards. The town has a rich history, with architectural landmarks such as the Church of Saint-Vincent, which dates back to the 12th century.

Chagny is also recognized for its gastronomic offerings, particularly its proximity to renowned wine-producing areas. The surrounding vineyards cater to the Burgundy wine heritage, attracting wine enthusiasts from around the world. The town hosts various local markets and festivals, showcasing regional products including cheeses and charcuterie.

In addition to its agricultural and culinary significance, Chagny is well-connected by the Burgundy Canal, providing opportunities for leisure activities like boating and cycling along the scenic pathways. The blend of historical charm and natural beauty makes Chagny an interesting destination within the Burgundy region.

To start with, our trip together came up when we were chatting online and we set dates. Once I felt that Monique was serious about it and excited to do the planning herself, I had to make a commitment by showing up, and take it from there. I couldn’t let this pass by and considered this trip as once in a lifetime.

Arriving early in Chagny, I biked around the town to familiar myself, then went my way back to Gare de Chagny and waited for Monique and Dominique. As the anticipated arrival of a train coming from Dijon, the train porter was setting up the lift cart. Dominique got off first and gave her a hug and we waited for Dominque in her wheel chair being helped by the porter. Dominique had a motorcycling accident many years ago in the Czech Republic. She lost the function of her lower limb, but could only use now her upper limb.

Being with Monique and Dominique was something special. There was no hesitation on my part. I made it happen to come there.

From the train station, we went to the place where we would be spending together for two nights –– Camping Paquier Fane. We got everything set before going out the campgroud. It’s the only camping site here and very popular place to spend the night. We found a place right across the square where the rooster sculpture is located. They still have the Tour de France symbols that it passed through this town this year.
