The Joy of Living 2023
In 2023, I had the chance to explore places I never imagined visiting before. I owe a special thanks to Sylvia, whose passion for visiting U.S. National Parks inspired me to join her adventures. Sylvia's enthusiasm has taken her to numerous parks in a remarkably short time. For me, traveling to such destinations is not just a mission, but an integral part of life's journey. I don't pressure myself to visit specific places; rather, experiencing different locations enriches my life's path at every stage.
Visiting Key Biscayne and Everglades in mid-January served as our winter getaway. After enduring an early snowfall, freezing temperatures, and dreary skies throughout November and December, we were in desperate need of a change of scenery. Flying to Miami and exploring the area felt like a refreshing taste of summer. During our stay in Key Largo, we ventured to the Key Biscayne Center to enjoy activities such as snorkeling, kayaking, and sailing. I am grateful for the opportunity to experience this trip.
Returning to Lake Bluff in winter is always a joy, regardless of the season. It's like having a winter vacation right at home. Biking through the snow, encountering white-tailed deer and birds still active in flight, adds an extra layer of magic to the experience. The backyard trail offers a sense of being enveloped by nature, despite its proximity to the city. A nighttime stroll along the trail is particularly thrilling, transporting you to another world altogether. In sum, I'm truly grateful for the opportunity to be here.
Not to be outdone, spring here has a beauty of its own and although not as festive as fall, its flowers and leaves come as a sign of life coming. I’m grateful to get to see the tones of green evolve and flowers around me.
Then, we got summer coming. How exciting that would be! Lots of plans, but hold on your horses. Just take things day-by-day. Although it was still the end of spring, the canoe marathon was scheduled and we just couldn’t let it pass by.
The Des Plaines River Canoe and Kayak Marathon is an annual event that takes place on the Des Plaines River in Illinois, United States. It is a long-distance race where participants paddle through the scenic river, navigating various challenges and obstacles along the course. We started off in Riverside Park Des Plaine River Access right on St. Mary’s Road. I enjoyed it a lot, although I’m not an expert when it comes kayaking, but I’m learning every time.
This year, we explored more of the Des Plaines River. We went cycling more on both sides coming form Old School Park. I say we can as far as we can to explore more and perhaps to downtown Chicago. Hopefully, 2024 will bring more opportunities. I thank for having a chance to live here and
Then, we jumpstarted off also the BBQ grill before July 4th. Here, I got carried away a bit, but that’s how it was. You know, learning to manage our tendencies. Putting it behind, it’s a beautiful scene — so green and it was sunny. Thanks to the beauty around us and the people who are caring. It was nice to see the boys in the neighborhood fishing. Fishing encourages boys to spend time outdoors, connecting with nature and enjoying fresh air. This can contribute to a healthier lifestyle and help combat sedentary habits associated with excessive screen time.
Right on the solstice week, we embarked to Iceland. We got together with acquaintances from Canada and explored the ring with a camper. Iceland has become an increasingly attractive destination in recent years due to its unique natural wonders, including spectacular landscapes of glaciers, geysers, hot springs, and waterfalls. The country's commitment to renewable energy sources, such as geothermal and hydroelectric power, has also garnered global attention. The thriving arts and cultural scene, influenced by Norse traditions and a rich literary history, adds to the allure. Additionally, Iceland's emphasis on sustainability and eco-friendly practices resonates with the growing global awareness of environmental issues. The Northern Lights, the Midnight Sun, and the welcoming Icelandic hospitality further contribute to the country's appeal, making it a sought-after destination for travelers seeking a combination of natural beauty, cultural richness, and environmental consciousness. In short, the country in itself is a National Park.
In Spain, I also joined friends in our yearly canyoning in Sierra de Guara. This has become our yearly event for nearly 10 years now. Thank to the good health of every member — Frederic and Roser (our leaders), Amparo, Neus, Txus, Beatriz, and Javier. With good health, we have kept this tradition going. Thanks for the good health of everybody over the years, we could still do this As for this year, we covered Baranco de Los Oscars after several years.
