Memories together with Estela run back from childhood. I started off in Santa Coloma de Gramenet with my cousin Estela and her husband Mariano. , the time when we were in Santa Coloma de Gramenet, it’s a district just outside Barcelona and next to Badalona. I remember and celebrate the life of a remarkable woman, Manang Estela. She was not just a caregiver but a cornerstone in our lives, especially for those of us fortunate enough to be part of the Piamonte family. Manang Estela was the first to care for us when we were mere children, and through the years, her love and dedication became an integral part of our lives.
For my sister Tess, Manang Estela wasn't just a caregiver; she was a cherished figure, a source of warmth, and a confidante. Tess held a special place in Manang Estela's heart, a connection that endured even when the opportunity to work abroad arose. Her decision to embark on a journey to Barcelona marked a significant chapter for all of us.
When I obtained my passport, Spain was an obvious first destination. And where else would I go but to visit Manang Estela? Those two weeks spent in Santa Coloma de Gramenet, just a short ride from the heart of Barcelona, became more than a vacation—they were a journey back to my roots. Her home was a sanctuary, echoing the flavors and conversations about family in the Philippines. It was more than a place to stay; it was a connection to our heritage.
I had the privilege of attending Mariano and Estela's wedding in 1997—an event that remains etched in my memory as a testament to their love. Over the years, I found myself returning to Barcelona, staying with Manang Estela, sharing vermouth, and relishing the traditions that tied us together. Her absence during my future visits will undoubtedly leave a void that cannot be filled.
Manang Estela's generosity knew no bounds. Whether it was buying something or treating us to meals at restaurants, she radiated a spirit of sharing. Her acts of kindness extended beyond our family; she sponsored education, purchased land, and even bought a house for the greater good of her loved ones. Her giving nature was not only seen in material possessions but also in the time and love she invested in her relationships.
Her love for the finer things in life was evident in her appreciation for technology, her love of red wine, and her delight in exquisite dining experiences. Yet, despite her appreciation for luxury, she remained down-to-earth, always ready to share a bottle of wine or enjoy a casual outing to El Corte Ingles.
Manang Estela cherished her friendships, organizing gatherings and moments of togetherness. Her circle of friends attests to the warmth and loyalty she brought to relationships. She loved to travel, exploring the world through cruises and bus rides, creating memories with friends.
As we bid farewell to Manang Estela, let us remember her not only for her material gifts but for the generosity of her spirit, her love for family and friends, and the memories that will forever linger in our hearts. May her legacy inspire us to live with an open heart and a giving soul, just as she did throughout her remarkable life.
Rest in peace, dear Manang Estela. You will be profoundly missed.
