Horta San Joan

Horta de Sant Joan is a beautiful medieval village in Catalonia’s Terra Alta region, near the border with Aragón. Perched on a hill at the foot of Els Ports Natural Park, it offers stunning mountain views, a rich history, and a deep connection to art—most notably through Pablo Picasso, who spent time here and called it a place where he learned everything.

Why Visit Horta de Sant Joan?

1. A Medieval Gem

  • The village retains its medieval charm, with cobbled streets, stone houses, and Renaissance-era buildings.

  • The Plaça de l’Església (Church Square) is the heart of the town, home to Santa Maria Church, a beautiful Gothic structure.

  • The Old Town Hall (Ajuntament Vell) is another highlight, featuring medieval arches and a history dating back to the Knights Templar.

2. Picasso’s Inspiration

  • Picasso Museum (Centre Picasso d’Horta): This small museum showcases the artist’s early works and his connection to the village.

  • Picasso visited twice, first in 1898 to recover from illness, and later in 1909, during his Cubist period. His famous quote about Horta:
"Everything I know, I learned in Horta."

3. Els Ports Natural Park

  • Horta is a gateway to Els Ports Natural Park, a rugged, mountainous area ideal for hiking, rock climbing, and wildlife spotting (including Iberian ibex).

  • The Convent of Sant Salvador, just outside the village, is a peaceful retreat with a spring-fed fountain and views of the surrounding nature.

4. Cycling the Vía Verde

  • Horta de Sant Joan is a key stop on the Vía Verde de la Val de Zafán, a scenic cycling route that follows an old railway line through tunnels, viaducts, and stunning countryside.

5. Local Gastronomy

  • The region is known for olive oil, wines, and traditional Catalan dishes like calçots (grilled green onions) and pan con tomate.

  • Small restaurants in the village serve hearty, rustic cuisine with local ingredients.
