Revisiting Alpargata Farm

Farm’s sea view

spent the month of August 2021 here, creating memories that still stay with me. When I first arrived, I felt a bit uneasy as Aurelio, the owner, led me to my cabin late at night. I had no sense of where I was, but the sound of ocean waves nearby reassured me, and I looked forward to seeing the shoreline in the morning after a long journey from Cádiz.

Inside the cabin, I hesitated about the bed’s condition, but I had come prepared with two crisp cotton sheets. That small comfort helped me settle in, and I slept soundly, lulled by the waves. At dawn, they gently woke me. Stepping outside, I was greeted by a breathtaking view.

The time I spent there was filled with unforgettable moments—living a carefree, almost hippie-like existence I had never imagined for myself. When I returned, hoping to find the same paradise, I was met with change. Sabine’s daughter showed me around, and I realized the cabins I had stayed in were gone. The terrain was different. I felt a lump in my throat, on the verge of tears.

Then, I saw Sabine making her way up from the beach, her bright blue eyes filled with enthusiasm. It was a fresh start. She marveled at how the neighbors had come together, helping one another rebuild. When I met Aurelio again, he echoed the same sentiment: It’s a new beginning. I was in awe of their resilience.

Our temple was burned down to the ground

I spent time watching the sea. It was my temple. We would light a candle here at night and watch the view. An amazing place!

Toilet gone with a sea view

It was built by a Frenchman who lived here with his family for years. They left the summer I arrived, and I had the chance to appreciate the beauty of the bathroom. I had never seen anything like it.

View from the farm

Despite the catastrophic damage from the wildfire, the beauty of this place remains untouched and the beauty of the people there is unchanged. They remain stronger and look forward to better things.
